Affordable, Quality Health Care for All
The U.S. spends more on health care than any other nation, well over two times the average of what other industrial countries spend. Health insurance premiums continue to rise at double digit rates each year. 25% of all adults under the age of 65 are uninsured at some time during a given year. Many Americans, especially those with low incomes or poor health, are unable to get access to affordable health care when they need it. Many plans with varying methods for achieving universal coverage have been released.
Working Families Win supports a universal healthcare coverage plan. We recognize that the current system is not the foundation for 21st century health care and that healthcare should be considered a fundamental human right. Everyone deserves to have this basic needs met.
Therefore Working Families Win seeks a Universal Health Care Plan in the United States that follows a few basic guidelines:
- Consumers have a choice of doctors and personal care options.
- Wellness promotion and preventative care must be a part of any basic benefit plan to promote sound health, control costs, and eliminate economic and racial disparities.
- Access to healthcare should be universal and include geographically viable services. Healthcare services that are too far away for patients to seek vital care are not acceptable
- Make denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions illegal.
- Plans should include measures to contain costs to the system and to patients.
- The health care system should be portable and not dependent on the employer-based model. Having a job should not be a prerequisite for having healthcare.
