Increasing the Minimum Wage

Thanks for helping minimum wage workers get a raise.

An increase in the federal minimum wage has passed and been signed into law. America's minimum wage workers will be getting a much deserved raise after 10 long years. The current $5.15/hour wage will increase to $7.25/hour by 2009 and will lift the wages of an estimated 13 million workers. We know 10 years is too long to wait on the political system to provide a fair wage increase. The federal minimum wage should be tied to the consumer price index rather than the whims of the political system.

Thank you for your good work in keeping the policy discussion moving forward on this and other vital working family issues.

Next Steps: Even as we celebrate this victory the real buying power of the minimum wage continues to erode. We must now begin working to provide an effective method for raising the minimum wage that is less dependent on political forces and more directly tied to the realities of working families.
