Before You Vote

Find out which Presidential candidates stand for Working Families.

While corporate profits rise and Wall Street booms, working families continue to be left behind. Why is that? Too many of our nation's public policies have contributed to the growing gap between the rich and everyone else, rather than shared prosperity. Those policies can be changed.

New trade rules can distribute the benefits of a globalizing economy more equitably to workers here and abroad. Health care for all Americans would address a major burden facing working families today. A real "living wage," investment in jobs, producing clean energy, and stronger rights for workers to join unions and bargain collectively would all help maintain our nation's middle class.

Where do the candidates stand on the issues most important to working families?

Jobs and Trade

Trade policy isn’t just about imports and tariffs anymore. Since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), trade policy impacts issues like state regulation of natural resources and water, whether or not jobs in our communities are outsourced, how our tax dollars are used for corporate subsidies/welfare, and corporate accountability.

Here are a few quick questions to ask the presidential candidates*:

Did the Candidate:

___Vote for or support NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, which has led to the loss of over 13,000 jobs in NH and gives corporations the right to sue the United States for environmental, labor and public health laws that reduce their profits?

___Vote for or support CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which increases illegal immigration when peasant farmers cannot compete with large US Agribusiness crops that are exported cheaply to Central America.

___Vote for or support “Fast Track” which takes away the Constitutional Authority of the United States Congress to determine trade policy and how it will be implemented.

Healthcare

Over 47 million people in the United States do not have affordable, preventative and adequate health care. More than 9 million of those are children. Everyday that number increases because many hardworking individuals and families cannot afford the 12 to 50% cost increase of their premiums. Half of all bankruptcies are caused by medical bills. Three-quarters of those filings are people with health insurance.

Here are a few quick questions to ask presidential candidates*:

Does the Candidate:

___ Support consumer choice of doctors and personal care options.

___ Support making denial coverage based on pre-existing conditions illegal.

___ Support the idea that our health care system should not be dependent on the employer-based model. Having a job should not be a prerequisite for having healthcare.

___ Support wellness promotion and preventative care as part of any basic benefit plan to promote sound health, control costs, and eliminate economic and racial disparities.

___ Support access to healthcare services that are geographically viable. Healthcare services that are too far away for patients to seek vital care are not acceptable.

___ Support measures to contain costs to the system and to patients.
