Why is this election so important?
Iowa State Senator Swati Dandekar's recent appointment to the Iowa Utilities Board has left an open seat in narrowly divided Iowa Senate. If Democrats win the Nov. 8 election, they will maintain control of the Senate, but if Republicans win in Nov. the Senate will be split 25-25 and consequently the balance of legislative power in Iowa will shift to the Republicans (because they control the State House and the Governorship).
Complete Republican control in Iowa would give the Tea Party extremists the power to move forward with efforts that thus far the Senate has successfully blocked such as eliminating Iowa's minimum wage, following Wisconsin's lead and destroying basic democratic rights for our hard working teachers, nurses, firefighters and other community heroes, rolling back expansion of childrens' healthcare and getting rid of universal preschool.
As if turning back progress for Iowa's working families isn't bad enough, the outcome of this election sends a signal to the rest of the country about voter priorities in the 2012 Presidential election. The eyes of the nation will be watching the outcome of this election! Iowa voters now have a chance to STAND UP and show the rest of the country that attacks on low-wage and middle-income working families are not our political priorites!
