Chuck Collins, Director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies, Representative Chuck Weed and Gail Merrill, Director of Community Services at Southwestern Community Services and will be joining local and statewide nonprofits for a community discussion in Keene, Beyond the Economic Meltdown: Where do we go from here, on Wednesday evening, January 14th, 2009.
Keene based, Working Families Win, the Department of Political Science and Economics at Keene State College, and the Antioch University Environmental Advocacy and Organizing Program, two Concord based non-profits, the American Friends Service Committee and the New Hampshire Citizens Alliance and the national Working Group on Extreme Inequality are sponsoring this event.
The goal of the event is to engage with individuals in our communities who may be facing uncertain economic times for either their family, business, local or state government. We will come together to look at some of the reasons for the economic meltdown at both the national and international level, how this is touching the lives of people in our community and review state and federal actions that we can each take as we move forward with a positive vision for our communities.
“The current economy is not working for many people.” said Jaime Contois, Working Families Win Organizer. “Jobs are being lost, many do not have or cannot afford health care, and affordable housing is scarce, but there are positive ways that we can make an impact in our communities and country in these important times”.
Chuck Collins, who will speak at the event, is a national expert on economic inequality and the economic crisis in the U.S. and coordinates a number of public policy initiatives to reduce income and wealth disparities. Based at the Institute for Policy Studies, he directs the Program on Inequality and the Common Good and chairs the Working Group on Extreme Inequality. He has authored Economic Apartheid in America: A Primer on Economic Inequality and The Moral Measure of the Economy and Insecurity and co-authored Wealth and Our Commonwealth with Bill Gates Sr.
Chuck has also co-founded several organizations to raise the profile of the inequality issue and organizing efforts to address inequality and to bring together business leaders and investors to publicly speak out against economic policies and corporate practices that worsen economic inequality.
“We invite all members of the community”, said Contois, “families, elected officials, professors, high school students, nurses, social workers, fire and police officials to come and be a part of this discussion as we move forward to build a stronger economy that is based on equality and shared prosperity”.
