WASHINGTON — New Mexico Sen. Jeff Bingaman and Virginia Sen. John Warner are asking the federal government to conserve fuel as gas prices rise.
Warner, R-Va., and Bingaman, D-N.M., introduced a sense-of-the-Senate resolution Thursday.
The bipartisan resolution urges President Bush to require that all federal departments and agencies take steps to reduce daily consumption of gas and other fuels.
The lawmakers cite gas prices they estimate have risen about a penny a day for the past month.
AAA reported a gallon of self-serve regular gas averaged $3.73 earlier this week in Virginia — 30 cents higher than last month and 67 cents higher than the same time last year.
