This week, Working Families Win Iowa kicked off its 2012 bird-dogging season at a campaign event in Mason City Iowa hosted by Congressman Steve King of Iowa’s new 4th congressional district.

Background:

The Working Families Win bird-dog project uses face-to-face interactions aimed at keeping politicians honest and countering the big money spent on air attacks and advertisements.  The group has stepped up its tactics since the Supreme Court’s Citizen United ruling which opened up flood gates for unlimited amounts of money to be spent on political campaigns and mudslinging.  “Our bird-dogging volunteers hope to break the cycle of years and years of propagating lies that favor political gain versus truthful and honest fact based debates that offer real policy solutions,” said Chris Schwartz, Working Families Win Iowa Organizer.

The Exchange:

Working Families Win Organizer Chris Schwartz began by telling the story of a young Mason City resident (and Rep. King constituent) who will be able to access much needed mental health services after the full implementation of President Obama’s health care policy. After highlighting this success story, Schwartz then questioned remarks made by the Congressman on CSPANs Washington Journal in which Rep. King falsely asserted that there will be 30 million more people uninsured as a result of “Obamacare.” In fact, all independent analyses state that 30 million more people will have access to health care under the President’s Health Care Policy – the exact opposite of Rep. King’s assertions. When questioned, Rep. King reiterated his false assertion and things escalated when Schwartz refused to back down. A heated exchange then ensued and Schwartz was escorted out of the event.  Watch the video and see what all the fuss is about.

Working Families Win will continue to engage in face conversations aimed at restoring truthfulness in political debates.  Schwartz predicts further campaign confrontations with Rep. King from other Working Families Win volunteers, particularly if he continues to repeat inaccuracies and not acknowledge facts.  “We’re going to be pushing him to be more accurate and to be more open minded as well,” Schwartz said in the Des Moines Register.
